Abstract

633,975. Measuring bridges. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ROSENBROCK, H. H. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 27996. [Class 37] The output circuit of a source such as a transmitter 10 is coupled through a feeder 12 and matching circuit 13 to a load such as an aerial 11. Circuit 13 includes a bridge composed of an inductor 17, resistance 18, inductor 19 and the input circuit of an auto-transformer 20. A milliammeter 21 is connected across one diagonal of the bridge, and the feeder 12 is connected across the other diagonal. The bridge is arranged to be balanced when the input impedance of transformer 20 is resistive and equal to the characteristic impedance of feeder 12. Any departure from the matched condition will give a deflection on milliammeter 21. As elements 17, 18 are in shunt to feeder 12 they are given high values. Inductor 19 is in series with feeder 12 and its effect is reduced by winding it in an opposed sense to winding 17 on a common dust core 22. This increases the sensitivity of the bridge. By including some reactance in element 18, it is possible to match a corresponding reactance in the load. To reduce power losses the resistance of 18 is made as large as is consistent with maintaining a satisfactory out - of - balance current through meter 21.
