Abstract

633,851. Loading and unloading refuse vehicles. LEWIN ROAD SWEEPERS, Ltd., and DEAR, A. T. C. Jan. 8, 1947, No. 658. [Class 78 (iv)] . A refuse-collecting vehicle is provided with a loading opening at its side at or adjacent the front end of hte refuse container, the latter being provided with a separate closable discharge opening at its rear end, a bladed impeller rotatable about an axis longitudinal of the vehicle and adjacent the front end of the container, a refuse loading conveyer in the container extending from a position at or adjacent the lower part of the loading opening to the impeller and adapted to receive refuse directly from the refuse bin on discharge of the contents of the latter through the loading opening and convey it to the impeller, the latter on rotation in a given direction packing such refuse towards the discharge opening of the container. In the embodiment shown, refuse discharged into the container 12 though an opening 13 falls on to an endless belt conveyer 18 by which it is fed to a screw propeller 22 which pushes it rearwardly into a compartment 31. The latter is provided with an endless belt conveyer 33 for discharging the refuse through a door 35, though this conveyer may be used during charging to effect more rapid loading of the compartment. The driving roller 19 of the conveyer 18 is driven from a power take-off shaft through a clutch by a chain 20 and shaft 21, whilst the impeller shaft 23 carries a gear wheel 28 driven by a gear wheel 29 connected to the driving roller 19. The driving roller 37 of the conveyer 33 is driven from the power take-off shaft through a clutch and gearing 38. The sides of the compartment 31 at their lower end slope inwardly towards the longitudinal edges of the conveyer 33. Specifications 633,852 and 633,853 are referred to.
