[Class 78 (iv)] A refuse-collecting vehicle comprising a container in which is mounted a rotatable impeller having blades for feeding refuse into the container and for packing it tightly therein, is provided with a conveyer adapted both to feed to the impeller refuse charged into the container and to convey refuse to a discharge opening. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, in which the container 12 is provided with an impeller 15 mounted as described in Specification 611,758, an endless belt conveyer 23 feeds to the impeller refuse introduced through a side opening 13 or through an opening 33 in a pivoted door 31, and when reversed, together with the impeller 15, conveys refuse from the container through the discharge door 31. The impeller shaft 17 is driven through gearing 20 from a shaft 21 connected through a clutch (not shown) to a power take-off shaft, whilst the conveyer driving roller 24 is connected through gearing 25 and a clutch to said power take-off shaft. The lower parts of the side walls of the container slope inwardly toward the edges of the conveyer belt. In a modification, Fig. 4, in which the container is formed with a charging opening in each side wall adjacent its front end, provision is made for driving both the impeller and conveyer in one direction only. The containers, Figs. 2, 4, may be loaded through hinged trap doors 38 with grit and sand for road sprinkling purposes, and in the construction shown in Fig. 4, the direction of movement of the conveyer may be made reversible so as to feed such material forwardly in the compartment 36, the discharge of such material being effected in the same manner as the refuse already described.
