Abstract

633,698. Heat-transmitting media. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIP'S GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26848. Convention date, March 10, 1943. [Class 64(ii)] [Also in Group XX] The temperature of an object is controlled at a remote point by transferring heat from the object to a thermostat, or vice versa, by means of an evaporating and condensing liquid contained in a conduit having closed ends. As shown in Fig. 1 the apparatus comprises two interconnected closed vessels, the one 13 in contact with the furnace 10 whose temperature is to be measured, the other 14 in contact with a thermometer 15, the arrangement being such that changes of heat in the furnace 10 cause corresponding evaporation or condensation of the liquid in the vessel 13 with reciprocal condensation or evaporation in the vessel 14, the heat thus released or absorbed being indicated on the thermometer 15 which may be replaced by a thermostat. The levels of the two vessels 13, 14 are arranged so that condensed liquid returns to the vessel from which it is normally evaporated, thus, as shown, vessel 14 is higher than vessel 13. If however the temperature of the object 10 is normally below ambient temperature the vessel 14 is arranged to be lower than vessel 13. Alternatively the two vessels may be at the same level but so designed that an excess quantity of liquid in the one is returned to the other in either direction.
