Abstract

632,733. Ammunition. ATKINS, A. A., CLEMMOW, E. P., ROE, H., and WEAVER, S. D. July 23,1947, No. 19820.. [Class 9 (i)] A cylindrical explosive charge has a preformed non-inflammable sheet of a thermoplastic resinous substance wrapped round its curved surface to inhibit burning, the sheet and the charge being bonded together by the application of heat and pressure. The charge may be a cordite composition consisting of 49.5 per cent nitrocellulose, 41.5 per cent nitroglycerine and 9 per cent diethyl diphenyl urea, all parts. being by weight. An extruded cordite charge 4.3 inches diameter and with a star-section axial bore is coated with a cellulose acetate plastic dissolved in acetone. The plastic composition is 55 parts cellulose acetate, 40 parts triacetin, 5 parts diethyl diphenyl urea. When the coating has dried a sheet of the plastic composition is wrapped three times round the charge, the sheet being <SP>1</SP>/ 40 inch thick and wider than the length of the charge. The wrapped charge is then placed in a bronze or other non- ferrous metal mould having passages for steamheating and water-cooling. The mould is in two semi-cylindrical parts, the internal surfaces being chromium-plated and lubricated with stearic acid powder or oleic acid. The internal diameter is 4.43 inches and when the two parts are forced together and steam is passed through the mould, excess plastic is extruded at the mating surfaces. After heating for 5 minutes, the mould is cooled and the coated charge removed. Alternative compositions are given for the plastic sheet. Non-combustible fillers such as asbestos, mica, titanium dioxide, magnesia, calcium hydroxide, " Celite " (Registered Trade Mark), or powdered chalk, may be incorporated in the sheet material. Instead of using a mould, the sheet material may be consolidated and bonded to the charge by three spaced parallel rollers. The wrapped charge is supported on two rollers having passages for heating fluids and the third roller is brought into contact with the charge to apply pressure. When using this method the sheet is given an initial set before application to the charge, by rolling it into a cylinder and applying a constraining ring. After pressure has been applied the sheet coating is about 0.06 inches thick. The treated charge may be wrapped in paper, asbestos sheet or with a textile fabric as in Specification 616,292. Specification 489,279 also is referred to.
