Abstract
631,904. Sliding-clasp fasteners. LIGHTNING FASTENERS, Ltd. (Lightning Fastener Co., Ltd.). Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21356. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXII] In means for making sliding-clasp fasteners preformed wire stock is fed into the path of a shearing tool, travelling in a closed path, and severed, then fed to a stamping die and indented by a punch travelling with the die and finally fed to a mounting station where the fastener is secured to a tape. Shearing. Preformed wire 26 is fed through an apertured die in a table 48 by feed rolls 52, 54 and is severed by blades 34 on planet pinions 74, 76 mounted on a sleeve 64. A shaft 66 carries a sun pinion 68 which is rotated at a speed to maintain the position of the blades 34 constant. Fingers on the blades 34 grip the fastener members and deposit them in a carrier 20 rotated by a shaft 80. Stamping. The members are clamped to the carrier 20 by indenting tools 36 on arms 86 oscillated about a pivot 82 by a fixed cam 90. At the indenting station the projecting legs of the fastener are supported by a hold-up finger on a co-operating disc. Fig. 7, (not shown), and the arms 86 are further oscillated, to form the locking indentations. The carrier 20 then feeds the member to a station at which it is secured to the tape. Feeding. Wire feed. Wire stock is fed by rolls 52, 54, the latter of which is intermittently rotated by an eccentric 58 and pawl 56. Tape feed. The tape is fed by a pawl 100 oscillated from the eccentric 58 and is guided by a member 42 which travels in an elliptical path, Fig. 7 (not shown). Attaching fasteners to tape. On a crank pin 110 on a shaft 108 is mounted an arm 112 guided at one end in a member 114. Resiliently mounted on the end of the arm is a tape guide 42 which sweeps past the indenting die and positions the tape on the fork of the fastener. Clinching arms 130 mounted on pivots 126 move in an elliptical path and are actuated at the limit of travel by a fixed pin 138 to effect clamping of the members on the tape.
