Abstract

631,379. Typewriters &c. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 3, 1946, No. 16754. Convention date, March 3, 1944. [Class 100 (iv)] [Also in Groups XIX and XXIV] A calculating-machine includes the following features, viz. : (1) means for automatically line-spacing a statement sheet when certain keys (including certain machine-control keys) are depressed and also when the paper-carriage reaches certain positions ; (2) means to move a platen roll from printing to open-throat position upon depression of a special key and also near the end of each machine operation and to move the roll to printing position upon depression of any numeral key and also under the control of carriage cams ; (3) means for printing certain kinds of item and total in a distinguishing colour, this means being overridden by the depression of a special key. The calculating-machine described (see Group XIX) is of the key-set motor-operated type. Moving platen roll from printing to openthroat position and vice versa. The platen roll 309, Fig. 99, is carried on bushes 1442 mounted in arms 1443 which are swung counterclockwise to move the platen from the printing position shown to the open-throat position when a " carriage key, not shown, is depressed. A second depression of the carriage key causes the platen to return to printing position. The carriage key pulls to the right, Fig. 12, a link 1492 which rocks a finger 1489 engaging the upturned end of a lever 1488 at this time situated in the narrow leg of a shaped hole in a latch 1484. The latch is thus rocked counterclockwise to release a yoke 1480 which engages a clutch 1471 geared to a rotary shaft 1153. As the yoke moves to engaging position it lifts the lever 1488 into the broad part of the shaped hole so that the latch 1484 is free to relatch the yoke 1480 when the latter is moved to disengaging position by a cam 1518 on the clutch as the latter completes a half revolution. The clutch drives a cam 1469, Fig. 115, which rocks counterclockwise a pair of levers 1463 to move to the left a link 1457 engaging a bar 1455 pivoted on the carriage. The bar 1455 is carried between arms 1452, Fig. 99, which are thus rocked clockwise and, by linkages 1451, 1450, 1448, swing the arms 1443 counterclockwise to lift the platen to open-throat position. The platen is retained and justified in the printing position by an arm 1558 and in the open-throat position by an arm 1582, these arms being swung to active and release positions by mechanism operated by the link 1448. The next depression of the carriage key engages the clutch to drive the cam 1469, Fig. 115, another half revolution and this returns the bar 1457 to the right to return the platen to printing position. The platen is also moved to the open-throat position near the end of each machine operation unless inhibiting means are operative. A cam on the main shaft trips a latch to allow a spring to move to the right the link 1492, Fig. 12, to engage the platen-moving clutch. The action is inhibited in desired columns by cams on the carriage. The platen is automatically moved from open-throat to printing position upon depression of a numeral or an item-counting key. Latch bars moved by said keys shift a bail connected to a shaft 1541, Fig. 12, which is thus rocked counterclockwise to pull a link 1533 to engage the platen-moving clutch as described above. The platen also moves to printing position when total or sub-total operations are initiated by the depression of keys or by the carriage. These keys and the carriage rock a machine-release shaft which causes the machine to start (see Group XIX), the shaft being connected to the shaft 1541, Fig. 12, which operates the link 1533 which engages the platen-moving clutch. Positioning and retaining statement sheet. The statement sheet 1550, Fig. 107, is inserted bottom first when the platen 309 is in openthroat position and is aligned against the top of a transparent bar 1590. A guide plate 1551 carried by a frame 1553 supported by the platen bushings 1442 is at this time spaced away from the platen roll. Before the platen roll commences to move to printing position, the moving levers 1448 cause, through means not shown in Fig. 107, the guide plate 1551 to press the statement sheet against the platen roll. The guide plate is automatically moved away from the roll again when the platen roll reaches the printing position, the. statement sheet being in this position held against the roll by spring-pressed rollers. Journal sheet. A journal sheet 1595, Fig. 103, retained in the machine is fed from a roll over a table 1596 fixed to a table plate 1601 pivoted on a shaft 1602 supported in arms 1603, Fig. 99, mounted on the platen-roll bushings 1442 and on studs 1555 so as to swing with the platen-roll. The sheet is held against the platen-roll by upper and lower rollers 1600, 1599, Fig. 103. The lower rollers 1599 are mounted in yokes 1604 pivoted to the table plate 1601 and urged against the plate by springs 1606. The table plate is urged clockwise by a spring 1607. The upper rollers 1600 are carried on arms 1613 and are so driven by gearing (not shown in Fig. 103) from a pinion on the platen roll that they tend to rotate with a greater surface speed than that of the roll so that the journal sheet is kept taut round the roll. A finger lever 1637, Fig. 102, is normally inaccessible, but moves to accessible position when the platen roll is in open-throat position. When the finger lever is in the left-hand dotted position, both rollers 1600, 1599 are engaged with the platen. Movement of the finger lever 1637 to the full-line position draws to the right a link 1610 having a pin 1628 which lifts the arm 1613 and upper rollers 1600 off the platenroll. Further movement of the finger lever 1637 causes a cam slope 1609 on the link 1610 to depress the table plate 1601 to remove the lower rollers 1599 from the platen-roll. Both upper and lower rollers are automatically restored into contact with the roll as the latter moves to printing position. The arms 1613 carrying the upper rollers may be moved by hand into a more fully-open position. Line spacing. Depression of a paper-feed key 1073, Fig. 60, moves to the left a bar 1727 connected by levers 1726, 1725 and a link 1724 to a shaft (not shown) which operates a onerevolution clutch similar to that used for moving the platen roll (see above). The clutch thus connects camsto a rotary shaft to reciprocate a bar 1700, Fig. 111, in contact with a bail 1695 extending across the paper carriage. The bail is carried in arms 1693 one of which by levers and a link 1686 rocks an arm carrying a pawl 1681 which advances a feed-wheel 1672 by one, two or three steps depending upon the position of a mask 1738 which is set by a finger lever (not shown in Fig. 111) to cause single, double or triple line-spacing. A detent 1677 bears on the teeth of the feed wheel and is engaged by a pin 1736 on the pawl at the end of the stroke to locate and lock the feed wheel in a precise line position. The feed wheel 1672, Fig. 49, is fixed to a drum 1673 having a knurled interior engaged by a knurled roller 1674 situated in a slot in a disc 1675 fixed to a sleeve 1669 connected by a slot-and-tenon connection to the bush 1442 to which is fixed the platen roll 309. Depression of the paperfeed kev thus causes the advance of this roll. A knob 1668 is fixed to the sleeve 1669. If this knob and sleeve be pulled to. the left against a spring 1671, a wedge 1676 disengages the roller 1674 from driving contact with the drum 1673 and the platen-roll can be adjusted by turning the knob 1668. Line-spacing also occurs when the machine is started by the normal depression of the vertical feed bar 171, Fig. 121, provided that a hand-set control slide is in position 1, 2 or 3. " Normal depression " is effected by depressing the bar to its normal depth and releasing the finger pressure, the bar then remaining depressed. The control slide rocks a pair of notched segments 1821, Figs. 121, 1822, Fig. 126, by means not shown in these Figures. A stud 1835 on the stem of the vertical feed-bar 171 rocks counterclockwise an arm 1837 spring-connected to an arm 1833 which pulls to the right a link 1832 to lower a feeler 1825 provided with sensing pins 1823, 1824 on to the notched segment 1821. When this latter is in positions 1, 2 or 3 the notch causes the feeler to rock clockwise to lower a pin 1842 to connect a slot in an arm 1728 with a slot in an arm 1844 fixed to a crank 1846 operated by a cam on the main shaft. The arm 1728 is thus rocked when the crank 1846 is operated to move the bar 1727, Fig. 60, to engage the clutch which causes line-spacing as described above. If the vertical-feed bar 171 is pressed and held down beyond its normal down position, a pin 1440 through certain connections lifts the pin 1842 to disable the connection between the arms 1728, 1844 to prevent line-spacing. If the hand-set control slide is in position 4, and the vertical feed-bar is normally depressed, a high part of the segment 1821 is below the sensing pin 1823 to obstruct movement of the feeler 1825 and this prevents line-spacing. When the main release bar 170, Fig. 11, is normally depressed a stud 1439 on the bar rocks clockwise a lever 1866 connected by a spring to a lever 1864 which lowers a feeler 1828, Fig. 126, on to the second notched segment 1823 set by the hand-set control slide. If this slide and segment are in position 3 (the segment is not so shown in Fig. 126), a high portion of the segment 1822 is beneath a sensing pin 1827 and a low portion beneath a sensing pin 1826. This causes the feeler 1828 to rock clockwise to engage a pin 1839 which lowers the pin 1842, Fig. 121, to cause linespacing. Depression and retention of the main release bar 170 below normal position also causes line-spacing, a stud 1439, Fig. 92, on the bar moving a hook 1399 into engagement with a pin on a reciprocating bar 1404. The hook
