Abstract

530,120. Calculating-apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 3, 1939, No. 16396. Convention date, June 4, 1938. [Class 106 (i)] A combined adding machine and typewriter for use in the preparation of bills or statements, such as money orders, having a plurality of detachable portions or slips on which are printed various data pertaining to the transaction is provided with a front feed travelling carriage and controlling mechanism associated therewith which automatically conditions the machine for certain types of operations, causes the machine to operate, and the travelling carriage to tabulate to print the desired data upon the different portions of the bill or statement in several consecutive and automatic machine operations. The invention is shown applied to an Ellis type of accounting machine as described in Specifications 28253/08, [Class 106], 401,749, 420,807,427,722, and 461,347. The machine is equipped with three adding totalizers and a consecutive number counting device. The different totalizers are selected and conditioned for addition by means of control blocks on a travelling carriage. The carriage, which can be tabulated manually or automatically, is of the front feed type with a throat that may be opened manually or automatically in predetermined columnar positions, a lock being provided to prevent machine operation while the throat is open. The usual bank of control keys is provided, the repeat, sub-total and total functions may be controlled manually by the respective control keys or automatically by means of control tappets in certain columnar positions. A selective carriage return mechanism is also provided as well as a two-colour inking ribbon mechanism. General operation. The machine has banks of keys 101, Fig. 1, which co-operate in the known manner with differential actuators 133 associated with type elements 154, the operation being derived from a continuously running motor 39, Fig. 3, through a one revolution clutch 50 which drives the main shafts 57, 146 and 156. Depressing the starting bar 58 rocks a plate 62 and lever 65 to free a stud 68 from an arm 69. The arm 69, attached pitman 71 and lever 74 under the action of a torsion spring releases the end 77 of the lever 74 from engagement with a clutch engaging lever 78 on a disc 52 which is rocked to expand a clutch band 82 into gripping relation with the driving member 50 causing a link 54 to oscillate an arm 56 secured to the main shaft 57. A flat surface 84 on the link engages a projection 85 on the lever 74 so as to restore it to a position to engage the lever 78 and terminate the operation. The release action is assisted by a spring controlled cam arm 87 co-operating with a roller 96 on the driven disc 52. Other starting bars 99, 100 are provided ; the bar 99 on depression releases the machine, line spaces the platen roll but prevents tabulating movement of the carriage ; the auxiliary bar 100 initiates an idle operation in which line spacing and tabulating movement are rendered inoperative. Carriage tabulating mechanism. The travelling carriage 46 is supported for lateral movement on rails 203, 206 and carries a platen 177 mounted in a rockable frame operated manually or automatically to open the throat 211 to feeding position. The carriage is urged in the tabulating direction by the usual spring actuated reel under the control of an escapement mechanism as described in Specification 514,973. This mechanism is controlled bv the keys of the typewriter attachment for letter spacing, and for tabulating to pre-determined positions a lever 246 terminating in a finger piece 244, Fig. 10, is provided. Depression of lever operates the escapement control bar 254 and stop bar 271, Fig. 27, in the known manner. The tabulating mechanism associated with the calculating mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 461,347. It may be operated manually by a tabulating key 275 or automatically by the tabulating hook 277 attached to the link 169 connecting the arm 56 on the main shaft 57 to an arm 170 operatively connected to the printer shaft 156. A manipulative lever 276 is provided to render the automatic mechanism effective or ineffective at will. The hook 277 co-operates with a lever 281 to control the carriage stop bar 300 and escapement control bars 311, 254, Fig. 27, in known manner. Totalizers. The totalizers Nos. 1, 2 and 4 are of the usual construction and selected for addition by means of hanging bars in cooperation with tappets 325 on control blocks 305. The No. 3 totalizer is used as a consecutive number counter. The totalizer engaging mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 427,722. The hanging bar 327 for the No. 1 totalizer engages a link 329 that controls the pawl 330, Fig. 13, and associated plate 333. A pin 336 on the plate 333 cooperates with a pawl 358 on the flying lever 349 to control the movement of the link 351 and the engaging cam plate 354. Machine release. The machine is locked against operation when the travelling carriage is out of columnar position by means similar to that described in Specification 427,722. Automatic repeat mechanism. A repeat print of certain items is effected by rendering the key release means inoperative at the end of a machine operation. A tappet 367, Fig. 10, on the control block 305 co-operates with a hanging lever 369 and link 370 to raise a latch 118 out of the path of a stud on the key release disc 122. With the latch 118 in its lower or effective position rotation of the disc 122 moves a pitman 117 rearwardly to rock a lever 115 and thereby shift a bar 113 which rocks the key detent plates 112. When the tappet 367 functions a link 340 is operated to set the add control pawl 341 for the No. 4 totalizer to select it for addition. A repeat operation may also be effected after depression of a repeat key 371 in the usual manner. Total and sub-total operations. The totalizers are selected and conditioned for sub-total operations by means of their respective subtotal keys 372-375 and a total operation, in any one of the four totalizers, may be performed by using the total key 376 in conjunction with the appropriate sub-total key. Depression of sub-total key 372 for No. 1 totalizer operates a latch lever 379 to impart clockwise movement to levers 384, 387 to move pawls 389, 391 into the path of the lower end of the flying lever 349 so that upon operation of the machine the plate 347 through the lever 349 causes the totalizer to engage the actuators. Depression of the sub-total key moves forwardly a release bar 400 and auxiliary release bar 408. These bars are interconnected by means of pins 410,411 and an enlargement on an arm 409 pivoted to the stem of the total key. Forward movement of the bars rocks a lever 406 into a position such that, at the end of the clockwise movement of the plate 347, an extension of the stud 348 of the flying lever 349 engages the foot 412 of the lever 406 thereby shifting the release bars rearwardly to release the depressed key 372 and permit the levers 384, 387 to rock and move the pawl 391 out of the path of the lever 349 thereby maintaining engagement of the totalizer with the actuators during the return movement. In total taking operations when the total key 376 is depressed the enlargement on the arm 409 is withdrawn from the pins 410, 411 so that movement of the bar 408 at the end of the clockwise movement of the plate 347 has no effect on the release bar 400 and the pawls 389, 391 will be retained in the path of the flying lever 349. At the beginning of the return movement the totalizer is disengaged ; subsequently a pin on the plate 347 engages a byepass pawl 419 on the release bar 400 to shift the bar rearwardly and release the sub-total key 372. Following this release the stud 121 of the release disc 122 rocks a tappet 423 and a stud 425 thereon co-operates with an arm 427 to rock a latch 416 to release the total key 376. The total key 376 is inaccessible to unauthorized persons by the provision of a lock 570, Fig. 11, in a housing 569. Automatic control of totalizer selection and machine operation. To print desired data upon the various portions of the record sheet mechanism, controlled by the travelling carriage, is provided to cause amounts set up on the keyboard to be repeat printed and also causes certain of the totalizers to be selected and conditioned for total and sub-total operations. For this purpose the carriage bar 274 has adjustable control blocks 428, 429 and 430, Fig. 18. The block 429, see Fig. 2, has a tappet 432 for co-operation with a lever 434 Fig. 10, which, in a certain column position, raises a link 436 to rock a yoke 437 free on a rod 438. The rod 438 is supported by hangers 439 on a shaft 445 and upon operation of the machine the hangers are rocked to cause the hook shaped end 447 of the yoke 437 in co-operation with a stud 448 to rock a shaft 450. The shaft 450 carries fast and loose plates 452, 454, Fig. 15, with an adjustable eccentric connection so that when the shaft is rocked the plate 454 depresses the No. 1 subtotal key 372. Similar mechanism is provided in association with the No. 3 sub-total key 374 ; this mechanism includes tappets 472, lever 476, link 477, yoke 478, hooked end 479, shaft 482, and plates 483, 485, the plate 485 having a stud engaging the No. 3 sub-total key 374. For automatically depressing the total key 376 the control block 429 has a tappet 456 for cooperation with a lever 458 link 459 and yoke 460, Figs. 10 and 14. The yoke 460 has a hooked end 461 to rock a shaft 464 when the machine is operated. The shaft 464 carries a crank 465 connected by a link 466 to a pivoted plate 467 with an adjustable eccentric connection to a plate 470 that engages a notch in the total kev stem 376. To initiate machine operation the control blocks 428, 429 have tappets 487, 488 and 489 that co-operate with a lever 499 to raise a link 500 and rock a y
