Abstract

258,522. National Cash Register Co., (Assignees of Arnold, C. H.). March 6, 1926 [Convention date]. Cash registers. - A machine of the key-set, independently-operated type is provided with means for printing a stub voucher by repeated hammer-impression, or an inserted slip by one impression, an " on or off " knob being utilized to prevent voucher-issuing when so desired. When certain special or transaction keys are depressed, however, the issue of a voucher is prevented irrespective of the setting of the knob and one operation of the hammer is effected for printing upon a slip. Keyboards; differential mechanism.-In addition to the amount keys there is a divided bank containing clerks' keys and three special keys 65 for use in "received-on-account," " charge " and " paid out " transactions. Ledger number keys 116 are also provided and these are differentially moved to set corresponding type wheels through sector and pinion gearing. These keys and type wheels are mounted, together with the ink-ribbon mechanism, on a frame removably mounted on the machine. The differential mechanism is of the kind employing a latch 41, Fig. 3, and a driving sector 42 rocked first clockwise to pick up the latch, then counterclockwise beyond home position and finally clockwise to this position. The differential movements of sectors 33 carrying the latches are conveyed in the usual manner to a totalizer 49, and to drum indicators 39 and by means of nested sleeves to type wheels mounted on a rod 60, Fig. 11. Differentially-moved indicators.-The indicator drum 64, Fig. 6, for the three transaction keys 65 is positioned by a rack 94 spring-drawn upwardly and connected by a link 105 with a lever 67 pivoted at 68. At the commencement of the rotation of the main shaft 76 a cam 980 rocks a detent 97 clockwise about its pivot 98 to release the rack for return to zero position. A lever 71 pivoted at 710 is then depressed by an arm 74 fixed on the rock shaft 75 and through a link 69 rocks the lever 67 counterclockwise until it is stopped by meeting a pin 66 on the key depressed. The indicator drum having thus been positioned is subsequently held by the return of the detent 97, the lever 67 meanwhile being retained by an aliner 113 engaging teeth 112 of a sector meshing with the lever until disengaged by the action of a block 114 on the cam disc 100. Voucher-issuing - The voucher-strip passes from a roll 155, Fig. 10, between one pair of printing and impression rollers 136, 157, through a shoot 158, between another pair of similar rollers and past a knife 160 to a receiving pocket 163. The shoot 158 is pivotally mounted and drawn by a spring into the position shown in Figs. 10 and 11 so as readily to receive the strip when first threaded into position. At each operation of the machine a cam 192 on the lower printing roller displaces the shoot clockwise to permit the unimpeded rotation of the roller. Consecutive-number and date-printing devices. These are mounted in each printing roller 136 and thus print on the back as well as the face of the voucher. The date wheels are set in the usual way by means of knobs 150. The numbering wheels are mounted on a shaft 135, Fig. 7, and are actuated by a tined pawl reciprocated by by connection with an arm 137, Fig. 7, carrying a roller running in a groove 139 formed eccentrically in a plate 140 pivoted at 141. Normally the groove is eccentric to the axis 179 of the printing-roller, but when the check-issue is to be disabled this plate is rocked to bring the groove into concentric relation and thus prevent reciprocation of the actuating pawl. Severing-mechanism. Adapted to reciprocate against the fixed blade 160, Fig. 11, is a blade 210 guided by spring-pressed flanged blocks and removably attached to a plate 208 pivoted to an arm 207 fixed to a shaft' 205. A pair of cams 172, Fig. 22, rotated by the main shaft, rocks this shaft 205 bv means of lever 200 and a link 201 having an L-shaped slot 202 receiving a pin on an arm 204 fast to the shaft. Voucher-impression mechanism. The hammer 220, Fig. 19, pivoted at 224 is spring-drawn into engagement with its operating frame 226, 227 adapted to be rocked by a pin 225 on a bellcrank 223 oscillated by a pin 222 carried by an arm 221 fixed on the shaft 75. The frame 226, 227 is. urged clockwise by a spring 229, but when displaced counterclockwise in the first movement of the shaft 75 it is retained by a pawl 235 until during the return stroke of the shaft 75 a pin 241 strikes the end of a link 238 connected to the pawl and so frees the frame to operate the hammer. After this first impression has been made the voucher is fed forward a short distance to receive a second impression. This impression is made during the second clockwise movement of the shaft 75 from its farthest backward position to its home position. For this purpose a link 245 is pivoted to the hammer at 239 and is urged to the left by a spring to engage its pin 246 with the left edge of a slot in a link 247 pivoted at 248. During the restoration to home position of the shaft 75 a hook 250 on the arm 221 seizes a nose 249 on the link and draws it downward and therefore rocks the hammeroperating frame counterclockwise until by the guiding of the pin 246 the hook and nose disengage to allow the hammer to be operated by the spring 229. The pawl 235 must be disabled to allow the second impression and to effect this a pin 252 on the pawl is engaged by a part of the voucher-ejecting mechanism to maintain the pawl raised. Feeding and ejecting the voucher. After the voucher has been severed and the first impression made, it is fed forward a short distance to receive the second impression and is then ejected into the pocket 163. The voucher is fed by means of a segment 255, Figs. 22 and 23, driving a roller 267 against which the voucher is pressed by a tension roller 269, Fig. 11. In the first forward rocking of shaft 75 the arm 221 moves the segment counterclockwise against spring action until it is held by a latch 258. During the return stroke the end 264 of the arm moves idly past a one-way pawl 263 on the latch, but in final clockwise movement to home position the latch is operated to free the segment for advance of the voucher to the second impression point. The segment moves at first only a short distance until its arm 257 meets a block 265 on the arm 221 but after the impression this block clears the arm 257 and the segment ejects the voucher into the pocket beneath a pivoted bifurcated retaining plate 271, Fig. 10. The tension roller 269 is permitted to rise into functioning position, prior to the complete severance of the voucher from the strip, by connection through a spring-link 282, Fig. 11, with the shaft 205 rocked by the cams 172, Fig. 22. It is necessary to maintain the tension roller raised until the operation of the machine is completed and for this purpose the roller is kept raised by a spring- controlled slide 296 normally depressed by the arm 251 of the segment 255. When the latter is rocked at the beginning of an operation the slide rises until its arm 295 engages beneath a flange on an arm rigid with the arm 291 connected to the spring link 282. Operation of this link and the resulting rocking of the arm 291 and the tension roller arm removes the flange to allow the slide to rise still further and thus prevent the roller and its operating mechanism from returning until by the restoration of the segment 255 the slide is forced downwardly again and the flanged arm and connected parts can return to normal. Manual control of voucher-issue. By turning a knob fixed to a shaft 306, Figs. 6 and 11, into the " off " position, the strip feed, consecutivenumbering, severing, ejecting and impression mechanisms are disabled. The shaft is urged by a coiled spring into the " on " position limited by a segmental plate 307 secured to the shaft and abutting against a stationary pin 304. A stud on the plate normally engages a hole in the adjacent frame, but when pushed in and turned the knob can be set to its " off " position in which it is held by another hole 312 receiving the stud. In this latter condition, a pin 313 on the plate shifts a spring-controlled link 315 to the left, rocking arms 317, 321 counterclockwise and displacing the eccentric mountings of the impression rollers 157, 159 to prevent the feed of the strip. Connections at 331 and 334 also rotate the plates containing the grooves for operating the consecutive numbering wheels so that these grooves are rendered concentric and therefore ineffective. A link 340, Fig. 22, attached to the pin 334 also shifts the link 201 so that it is no longer capable of conveying motion from the cams 172 to the rockshaft 205 and thus to the severing mechanism and the means for raising the tension roller into operative or ejecting position. Moreover, a lever 316 is moved so that its upper end forces the link 238 to the right, Fig. 19, to prevent its operation by the pin 241 and therefore the release by the pawl 235 of the hammer-operating frame. Further, the link 247, which is secured to the lever 316, is moved to the right to displace the link 245 sufficiently to prevent cooperation between the hook 250 and nose 249 and therefore the second operation of the hammer. Lastly, a projection of the lever 316 presses in the one-way pawl 263 to prevent release of the voucher-ejecting segment by the latch 258. Printing on inserted material.-When any one of the three special transaction keys 65 is used an inserted slip is to be printed and the voucherissue disabled. If the knob is set to " on," this entails the prevention of the second impression, whereas if the knob is at " off," the first impression means must be rendered operative.
