Abstract
630,808. Centrifugal separators. DE LAVAL SEPARATOR CO. July 1, 1947. No. 17313. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1939. [Class 23] Fine solids are separated from liquids in a bowl comprising a set of comparatively thin walled chambers c having radial axes which are spaced apart at equal angles, and thick annular external plates h between which the chambers are secured. The separating chambers are made of alloy steel and the heavy plates which prevent bursting at high speed and improve balance are made of carbon steel. The chambers c are of rectangular shape at their inner ends and of conical form at their outer ends. The driving shaft a is secured to the lower plate h. Radial plates k have portions extending through the plates h and fitted with nuts h<SP>11</SP>. Shields i secured to the plates h extend down to removable peripheral sludge outlets e held in place by nuts d. The liquid to be treated is fed through the driving shaft and is distributed by radial tubes f. Light liquid is removed by vertical pipes g with perforated walls. The sludge outlets are controlled by valve members r intermittently actuated against centrifugal force by hydraulic means 11 through pivoted levers 10, s. A rod z carrying a frusto-conical block v transmits the movement of the lever 10 by contact with a ball u carried by a tubular pin t abutting the lever s. The separating bowl is arranged in a stationary chamber o provided with an air inlet 12 and air outlets 13. Vanes 14 on the lower plate h produce an air flow and aerate the sludge which is sprayed into the chamber when the valves r are opened. Sludge falling to the bottom of the chamber is picked up and scattered by fans 15. By this treatment the sludge is rendered 20 per cent dryer when it reaches the outlet p. The chamber o is surrounded by a chamber m into which the pipes g discharge. Ah outlet n is provided in this chamber.
