Abstract

Non-metallic heat-resisting bases capable of withstanding a firing temperature of at least 400 DEG C., such as glass, mica, porcelain, earthenware and electrical insulating materials, are silvered by applying to the base a layer of fusible flux including an alkali titano-silicate, firing such layer, applying to the fired-on flux layer a layer or film of silver powder or a silver compound dispersed in an organic medium, and firing the coated base to burn away the organic matter and leave a firmly adherent layer or film of silver. The flux, which may comprise two parts of lead borosilicate and one part of sodium titano-silicate, may be applied by painting a dispersion thereof in a 5 per cent solution of nitrocellulose in amyl lactate on the base, which may then be fired at 500-700 DEG C. The silver, or silver oxide or carbonate, dispersed in a similar solution, is then applied and also fired at 500-700 DEG C.
