Abstract

630,696. Shelters for bus passengers and the like. CHAPMAN, A. F. Oct. 21, 1946, No. 31288. [Class 20(i)] In a bus or like shelter the roof covering 12 of sheet material, e.g. metal, asbestos or plastic, is supported on and secured to a number of separate cantilever ribs 11 of cast metal or fabricated from metal sections, each rib being located in a vertical slot 22, 31 formed in a split collar secured around a pillar 10 (Fig. 5) or formed on the pillar 30 (Fig. 6) itself. Bolts 23, 32 are provided to secure the ribs in place. The pillar may be a lamp post or tram standard, in which case a split collar is used which may have an oblique bore to allow for any inclination of the post or standard to the vertical. Alternatively each rib may be individually adjustable for level on the collar as shown in Fig. 8, a rounded projection 46 on the rib fitting into a hollow on the collar and a screw 47 being provided to adjust the level of the rib which is clamped in adjusted position by bolts 23. In another modification, Fig. 9, the bore of the split collar is larger than the post and is adjusted for verticality by sets of screws 58 pointed to grip the post. In a further modification the ribs are clamped directly to the post by clamping straps passing around the vertical limbs of the ribs. In all arrangements the roof covering slopes downwardly towards the post and has inverted channel parts 14 to fit over the ribs. A depending skirt may be provided around the periphery of the roof. Rainwater drains towards the post, through holes 16 in the roof covering and into a trough 17, 33 clamped around or integral with the post, from which it passes through holes 18, 34 to the inside of the post. The roof covering may be rectangular with a hole for the post in the middle or towards one edge. Two or more shelters may be arranged adjacent each other, with the roofs adjoining or overlapping and secured together if desired. Shelter and advertisement panels may be arranged between the posts. According to the Provisional Specification two or more posts may be provided for a single roof covering instead of two identical shelters being arranged in proximity, the ribs being suitably shaped to give a fall to the covering for rainwater.
