Abstract
Tetramethyl silicate is prepared by passing methyl alcohol through the interstices of a mass consisting of silicon with copper or with a compound yielding copper under the conditions of the reaction, the temperature of said mass being within the range 150 DEG to 450 DEG C. Suitable copper compounds are oxides, hydroxides, halides, nitrates, acetates, formates, carbonates or cyanides of copper. By weight, from about 2 to 50 per cent of copper or copper compound may be used based on the total weight of the silicon and copper or copper compound. In examples, methyl silicate is prepared by passing methyl alcohol over heated powdered copper and silicon, copper-silicon alloy, and a mixture of silicon and cuprous oxide powders. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of tetraethyl silicate from ethyl alcohol by the above method. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
