Abstract

629,961. Percussive tools. STUTZ, M. A. April 18, 1947, No. 10433. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXIV] In percussive or vibrating apparatus of the centrifugal reaction type in which an inner mass rotates in the opposite direction to a pair of concentric outer masses at opposite sides of the inner mass, the outer masses 4 are inter-connected by a shaft which lies within the orbit of the inner mass 5 and is coaxial with the common axis of rotation, and the masses are driven by a bevel pinion 12 in mesh with two bevel wheels 9, 11 coaxial with said shaft, the bevel wheels driving the outer and inner masses respectively. The inner-connecting shaft comprises sleeves 6 integral with the outer masses 4, coupled by dogs 7, and surrounded by bushes 8, 10 integral with the bevel wheels 9, 11 respectively. The masses rotate about a shaft 13 carried by a reciprocable frame 15 with collars 16, 17 slidable along fixed hollow spigots 18, 20 respectively which may be square or otherwise formed with one or more flats to prevent relative rotation of the frame 15. Cushioning and reaction springs 33, 34 are provided within the spigots. The pinion 12 and its driving shaft 3 are coaxial with the axis of reciprocation, and the frame 15 carries a removable striker head 22 which operates on a slidable transmitter or tool holder 23. The bevel wheels 9, 11 are connected to their respective masses 4, 5 by shock-absorbing transmissions, each comprising coil springs 26, 27 in complementary arcuate grooves 28, one end of each spring being secured to a block 30 attached to a bevel wheel, and the opposite ends to blocks 32 in the opposite ends of the grooves in the. masses.
