Abstract
629,447. Suspension devices. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Lid., and FIRMAN, R. A. Oct. 3, 1947, No. 26668. [Classes 44 and 89 (ii)] In a hook device for the suspension and release of loads, of the type disclosed in Specification 572,809, the hook members 62, 63 are held together by a roller 66 engaged between surfaces 621, 631 on the jaws. The roller is retained in position by a mechanism comprising a braced linkage which is caused to collapse by means of a blow from an electrically operated rotary actuator 73. To enable the mechanism to withstand shocks, a shock absorbing member is interposed between the rotary actuator and the linkage arm 71. The shock absorbing member may comprise a pad of felt 28 as in the form of Fig. 2 in which-the linkage is shown in the collapsed position the pad normally resting on the link 71 under the influence of the spring 26 to retain the linkage in the braced position. Energisation of the coil 76 turns the actuator against the action of the spring so that the lower face 25 delivers a blow under the link 71 to cause the linkage to collapse. In another form, shown in Fig. 3 with the linkage in the braced position, the shock absorber comprises a spring wire 29 secured to the rotary actuator and having a bridge piece bearing on the knuckle joint of the links 71, 70. The links may be provided with a V notch in which the bridge piece sits. As the actuator turns to release the load, the bridge piece of the wire is lifted to free the links before the surface 25 delivers a blow to the link 71 to cause the linkage to collapse.
