Abstract

485,831. Independent wheel suspensions. GOLDSCHMIDT, M. (Leighton, J. W.) Oct. 18, 1937, No. 28256. [Class 108 (ii)] In an independent wheel suspension a spring pad 50 is mounted on trunnion supports formed as threaded bearings in link members 16, 18 of the lower triangulated link carrying the king- pin. As shown, the king-pin 22 is connected by an upper arm 14 and a pair of pivoted links 16, 18 to a transverse member 11 and carries a sleeve 26 on which is a stub axle 24. The lower pair of links 16, 18, Fig. 2, is pivoted at one end to a bar 34 which is attached by bolts 37 to the member 11 and at the other end is pivotally connected to a bar 36 which is bored to receive the end of the king-pin 22. The pivot joints at each end of the links are of the threaded type, the external threads on the bushings 40, 42 cutting a thread in their corresponding holes in the link 16. The supporting spring 20 is carried in a pad 50 pivoted by threaded joints to the links 16, 18 and bears at its upper end on an extension of the member 11. The pan 50 is also provided with lugs 56 for the attachment of a shock-absorber 58. A buffer plate 62 is formed on the end of the member 11 for contact with a buffer 64 attached to a bar 66 keyed at one end to the link 18 and loosely mounted in the link 16. The pan 50 may be somewhat rectangular in shape with a depression to receive the spring, or it may be a plate fixed to the links and domed at the centre to take a correspondingly shaped spring-plate which rocks on the dome and provides the pivotal movement for the spring. The buffer 64 may also be attached to a flat plate which is fixed to one link and rests on the other.
