Abstract

629,342. Metal shingles. SPERRY, C. F. July 22, 1947, No. 19654. [Classes 20(iv) and 87(i)] A roof construction has a series of taper blocks 11, 12, 13 secured to a rafter 10 and presenting stepped surfaces to which sheathing boards 15 are applied with edges 16 projecting beyond the downwardly facing shoulders 14 to form recesses 20. Above the sheathing boards are applied metal shingles each consisting of a length 17 reversely bent at 18 extending into the recess 20 and terminating in the portion 21 which is nailed at 22 to the sheathing board. The lower end of the shingle is bent downwardly as at 23 to cover the securing portion 21 and fasteners 22 of the shingle next below and terminates in the lower edge 24. Eave strips are provided, the upper ends being formed with a reverse bend 27 and a securing portion 25, the lower ends being formed as drips 29. When the eave strip has been applied the securing portion 21 of the lowest shingle is hammered upwardly thus draw ing the shingle tightly against the securing portion 25, this tightness being maintained when the fasteners are driven in. The bent portion 18 acts in the manner of a spring. As each succeeding course is laid tightness is maintained. At the junction of the metal shingles a strip of bonding material is used as indicated at 31. At hips and valleys in a roof plain shingles are laid on the roof to a point approaching the corner, corner shingles being then applied and the overlapping portions being secured together by a bonding material. These corner shingles will be tightened upwardly as in the case of the plain shingles. The ridge cap is slipped over the sheathing boards before the lower ends of the cap are bent upwardly and inwardly under the boards to hold the cap in position.
