629,206. Adjusting centre of gravity. ROBINSON & SON, Ltd., T., and WESTWOOD, A. Oct. 25, 1947, No. 28570. [Class 97 (iii)] Apparatus for balancing the cutters used in cutter blocks of wood-working machinery comprises a pivoted balance arm having supports at one end for the cutters in various positions and at the other end having adjustable balancing members and a movable part of a balance indicator co-operating with a fixed part on the apparatus. Preferably the adjustable balancing members comprise removable weights and screws with adjustable nuts for fine adjustment and the movable part of the balance indicator is in the form of a plate or dial moving with the balance arm over a pointer fixed on the end of an arm secured to the base, the pivot arm being secured to a transverse support mounted on knife edges in side supports integral with the base. The support for the cutters 25, Fig. 6, provided at the end of the arm 14, remote from the balancing members, preferably comprises a platform 22 having upright arms 23, the platform extending to either side of the arms and a notch 24, Fig. 8, being provided centrally between the arms. In use a pair of cutters is selected of identical dimensions and as nearly as possible equal in weight and the first is balanced with one end A<SP>1</SP> abutting the arm 23. It is then replaced by the second and the end A<SP>1</SP> of the heavier marked, e.g. with chalk. The operation is repeated with the other end A of each cutter abutting the arms 23. The cutters are then compared in the position shown in Fig. 6 and then with their cutting edges abutting the more remote of the arms 23. In all cases the edge of the heavier cutter at right angles to the arm 14 and remote from the pivot of the balance is appropriately marked. The cutters are then compared in the position shown in Fig. 8 and subsequently in similar position but inclined outwardly so that their faces abut the remoter arm 23. In these two comparisons the face of the heavier cutter further from the fulcrum is marked. From the markings it is possible to ascertain from which parts of the cutter metal is to be removed so that it is accurately balanced with its pair, the amount of metal to be removed may be ascertained by noting in each operation the amount of small nails required to balance the lighter cutter to the heavier.
