Abstract
628,951. Bridges. PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE CO., Ltd., and MAUTNER, K. W. April 11, 1945, No. 8945. [Class 20(i)] Applies the principle of pre-stressing concrete to arches and discloses a method of constructing reinforced concrete archbridges where the roadway is above the arch, Fig. 2a, whereby the arch, which comprises cavities, is connected to heavy end counterweights g<SP>1</SP> and the upper thickness of the cross-section is pre-stressed by means of non-banded but permanently incorporated tendons r<SP>1</SP> anchored at m<SP>1</SP> and stretched after their incorporation, the prestressing being applied to such an extent that the tensile stresses in the concrete are either reduced to nil or below the tensile strength of the concrete. By this method heavy abutments h<SP>1</SP> are obviated if the rise-span ratio is kept small e.g. about 1/10. Other means to produce a moment acting in the same sense as the counterweight g<SP>1</SP> may be used e.g. a retaining wall and earth prism, or rigid frames for the side spans.
