628,624. Tubes for air and gas heating stoves. AKT.-GES. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN. Jan 10, 1947, No .897. Convention date, Jan. 14, 1946. [Class 64(i)] A metallic heat transfer tube, for use in heaters for gases under pressure in which the temperature of the tube walls is 1,000‹F. or higher and the stress in the metal of the tube walls is 2,500-5,000 lbs./ sq. in., comprises a stress resisting core 6 of an alloy steel (such as stainless steel) having good creep resistance and also a thin envelope 9 composed of an alloy steel (e.g. containing 20-30 per cent chromium) having good resistance to the corrosive effects of slag and combustion gases. Furthermore, the envelope is not united with the core but is in close contact with it at atmospheric temperatures and has a coefficient of thermal expansion materially lower than that of the core 6 so that at operating temperatures it is stressed and good heat transfer is assured. The envelope may be strip-wrapped around the core and locked at its edges in a longitudinal seam (not shown) or may, as shown, be a strip 9 helically wound with a slight overlap 11 at the edges and preferably tack-welded to itself at intervals as at 12 to accommodate minor flexures of the core. The envelope strips are approximately 0.01 in. in' thickness and may be replaced, if burnt out, without removal of the tube 6. Specification 468,287, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
