Abstract
627,224. Moulding heat exchangers. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and COHEN, H. June 20, 1946, No. 18636. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] Relates to heat exchangers of the regenerator type comprising a matrix of refractory material with passages for the alternate flow of hot and cold fluids as the exchanger is rotated through the hot and cold media. According to the invention, a strip of ceramic material provided with ridges is wound to form a matrix having a plurality of superposed layers so that the ridges define passages traversing the matrix. A plastic mass 4 of ceramic material is passed between oppositely rotating rollers 6, 7 to form a strip 5. A gauze strip 9 is simultaneously fed to the rollers from a roll 8 so that the ceramic strip 5 is backed with gauze. The composite strip 5 is then passed through a press 10 which forms a series of parallel ridges 2 on the strip. The strip 5 is dried by passage through a heater 11 and then wound on a core 12. When sufficient layers have been wound the strip is cut, the assembly is then fired and the core 12 removed, the gauze layer having been burnt off in the firing process. A thermo-plastic ingredient may be incorporated in the ceramic material to facilitate winding. The ridges may be formed by passing the strip through two rollers one of which is provided with flukes or projections.
