Abstract

627,009. Radius grinding of cutting-tools. DEHN, F. B. (Meyers Co., W. F.). Aug. 24, No. 21799. [Class 60] changeable. In apparatus for forming a prescribed end radius on a spirally fluted cutting tool a turntable is mounted for rotation on a base member and carries the support for the tool through the intermediary of a slide to permit the tool to be oscillated through movement of the turntable and to be also rotated by means of its support; a cam is adjustably mounted on the base member and a cam follower is secured to the rotary support for the tool, said cam follower being engageable with the cam upon oscillatory movement to bring about rotative movement of the tool about its axial centre, according to the spiral curvature of the flute. A base 12, which can be clamped to the adjustable bed plate of a grinding machine having a cupped grinding wheel 11, carries a base plate 12a provided with a turntable 15 which carries a longitudinal slide 17, movable by handwheel 53, and transverse slide 18, movable by rack and pinion operated by handle 58. The slide 18 carries a pillar 19 on which are adjustably mounted supporting rollers 21 and hold-down roller 23 for a cylindrical member 22 containing a split collet 29 which can be clamped on to the tool 30 by tightening member 31. Secured to the end of the member 22 is an indexing collar 32 having a series of notches 33 selectively engaged by a spring- pressed plunger 41 carried by a ring 34 which is restrained by a spring and carries a rod 43 which bears against a cam block- 44, so that as the turntable is oscillated through an arc of 90 degrees the tool 30 is turned about its axis, so that the grinder follows the flutes. The cam block 44 is adjustably mounted in a slot in arm 50 extending from head 49, rotatable about the same axis as the turntable 15, and carried by arm 48 and standard 46 clamped to the base plate 12a. The base has a notch 10b, to receive a bar to tilt the apparatus relaytive to the grinding wheel as shown.
