, Otherobiects will be in part obvlcus'or in part pointed out hereinafter. I
'I-his invention accordingly consists in the fea- 25 tures of construction, combinations of elements,v
and arrangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
so In the accompanying drawingin' which is shown'one of the various possible embodiments of the mechanical features of this invention,
Fig." 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a grinding machine "showing the improved truing 5 apparatus in operative position to true the side face of the grinding wheelyand 1 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross sectional view showing the truing apparatus in position for truing the peripheral surface of the grinding wheel. 40 The embodiment of the invention selected for illustration comprises a grinding machine having a base III which supports a longitudinally movable work supporting table II on the usual 'V-way I2 and fiat way I3. A rotatable grinding wheel I4 is-supported on a wheel spindle I5 which is rotatably journaled in a wheel .slide I6. The wheel'slide I. is arranged for a transverse movement relative to the base II and is supported thereon by ways:
50 I1. The slide It may be moved transversely relative to the base by afeeding mechanism which comprises a depending half nut I3 on the slide I6 which meshes with a rotatable feed screw is rotatably supported in bearings in the 55 base is of the. The front end of the invention.
screw I3 is provided with a gear 2| meshing with a gear 22 mounted on the inner end of a rotata able shaft'23. The shaft 23 may be rotated, either feeding mechanism such as, for example, that 5 shown in the expired U. S. patentto Norton No. 762,838 dated June 14, 1904. The feed mechanism serves when rotated to turn the cross feed screw I3 and cause a transverse movement of the grinding wheel I4 either toward or from 10] tration, however, the work table is provided witha pair of opposed work supporting heads 30 and 3| having rotatable spindles 32 and .33 which in turn support rotary work holders 34 and 35 respectively. The work holders 34 and 35 are I arranged to support the opposite ends of a work piece and are provided with clamping members 33 and 31 which serve torigidly clamp a work piece in operating position on themachine. The details of construction f the work supporting heads 33 and 3I and the work holders 34, and "have not been illustrated in the present case, since these are not considered parts of the present For further details of the construction of the head and work holders, reference may be had to the prior patent to Silven, et al. No. 1,837,342 dated December 22, 1931.
The work table II is slidably mounted on the ways I2 and I3 of base II) to permit, a longi-' tudinal movement of the work piece relative to the grinding wheel to position the work in the 40 desired'relation with the operative face of the grinding wheel. A. manually operable mechanism is provided *for moving the table II longitudinally relative to the base 1.0. This mechanism comprises a rack bar 31 depending from '4 the table II. The rack 37 mesha with a gear 33 which is mounted on the inner end of a rotatable shaft 33. The-shaft 33 also supports a gear 40 which meshes with a gear 4| mounted on the inner end of a rotatable shaft 42. The outer end of shaft 42 is provided with a manually operable hand wheel 43 which serves through the train of gears and rack, above described, 7 to cause a longitudinal positioning movement of the table II relative to the grinding wheel I4.
In the grinding of work pieces, such as crankpins on a multiple throw crankshaft, it is necessary-not only to grind the cylindrical body of the crankpintothe desired size and finish but it is also necessary to grind the checks or side end faces adjacent to the ends} of thecrankpin so that the distance between the cheeks comes within the required limits. To accomplish this re-.- sult, it is desirable to provide a grinding wheel with an operative peripheral surface for grinding the body or cylindrical portion of the crankpin and to provide such a wheel of a thickness which will-grind the cheeks of the pin to the required dimensions. It is accordingly desirable to-provide a' truing apparatus for not oniy-tming the periphery of the grinding wheel but which is adapted to also true one or both side faces thereof to true the wheel to the required thickness to produce the crankpin and cheeks of the required dimensions. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated. this apparatus comprises a supporting shaft 50 which-as illustrated in the drawing has its opposite ends clamped rigidly in the work heads 35 and 35 by means of the work clamps 36 and 31. A rotatable sleeve 5| is rotatably supported on the shaft and'is held in an ad'- justed longitudinal position thereon by means of a flange 52 which is formed as an integral part ofthe shaft 59. The-sleeve 5| is held in place on the shaft 58 in the proper relation with the fixed flange 52 by means of anadjustable collar 53 which is adjustably supported on the other end of shaft 50 by means of a threaded portion 54.
The sleeve 5| is provided with upwardly ex-' tending bosses 55 and-55 each of which is provided with an aperture 51 and 58 respectively which are arranged with their axes at right angles to the axis of the sleeve 5| and shaft 50.. A truing tool holder 59 and 50 are supported in the apertures 51 and 58 and locked in adjusted position relative thereto by means'of clamping screws GI and 52 respectively. Theouterends of the holders 59 and 68 serve to adjustably sup:
port a truing tool,'such as a-diamond truing tool and 68 respectively which are held in adjusted position thereon by clamping. screws 61 and 68 so that the .truing tools or diamonds may be readily removed and replaced when desired or adjusted relative to the holders.
The manually operable leverv 15 is provided to rockthe' sleeve 5| relative to the shaft 59 soas .to swing the diamonds 85 or, man arcuate path. across a portion of the oppositeside face. of the grinding wheel I4. -fI'he lever 15 is copnected to an adjustable collar 18 which surrounds the sleeve 5|. The collar 15 is provided with a central aperture 11 which snugly fits the outer diameter of the sleeve 5| and is preferably split as .shown at 18 and arranged to be clamped in adjusted position on sleeve 5| by means of a ing tool from by swinging the diamond in anarcuate path across a portion of the side face of the grinding .wheel M.
An adjustable stop 85 is provided to limit the movement of the lever 15 in one direction. The stop 85 is adjustably supported on a base member 86 which is provided with a dovetailed surface 81 mating with a correspondingly dovetailed 88 on table II and arranged to be attachment in a definite position on the work table II.
In order that the diamonds or'truing tools 55 and 55 may be located in predetermined positionsrelative to the grinding wheel I for successive truing operations, it is desirable to provide a suitable locating means for accurately positioning the table II relative to the base iii. In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, such a mechanism may comprise a stop 95 which is pivctally connected on a stud 95 on the base Hi. The
stop 95 is shown in full lines in its operating position.\ When this stop 95 is not required, it may he s downwardly about its pivot 96 into a position 95a, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig.
I 1. The table l, is provided with adjustable dogs 91 and 98 which are adjustably clamped to table II by screws 99 and I08 respectively. The dogs 91 and 98 are each provided with an adjusting screw |0| and I82 respectively, which are arranged to engage the side faces of the stop block 95 to definitely locate the diamonds 65 and 55 in a predetermined position relative to the wheel I. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the table II has been moved toward the right, by means of the hand traverse. wheel 43, so that the screw |0| of do; 91 is in engagement with the stop 95. This serves to locate diamond or truing' tool 55 in a. predetermined position for truing the left-hand side face of the grinding wheel It. To true this side face of the wheel, the lever," is rocked from the full line position (Fig. 2) into position 15a toward theleit, as viewed in Fig. 1, by means of.
the hand traverse wheel 43 until the stop screw N2 of dog 98 engages the'stop 95 which serves to accurately position the diamond or truing' tool 56 relative to the right-hand end face of the grinding wheel H. By a similar rocking movement .of the sleeve 5| by means of the lever 15,
the'diamond 56 may be then swung in an armate path across a portion of the side face of grimiing'wheel H to true itsTight-hand end face. as viewed-in Figgl; It will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure that by adjustment of the screws ||l| and I02, the position of the truing tools and 65 may be varied so as to true the side faces of the grinding wheel II to the desired extent.
It is also desirable to provide the truing ap- 'paratus with a third diamond or truing tool 8 mounted in a holder which is held in position oh the sleeve 5| in an aperture in an outwardly.
extending boss 2 by means of a, clamping screw H3. To true the peripheral face of the grinding wheel, the lever -15 is held in the full line position (Fig. 2) so that the diamond l8 engages theperipheral surface of the wheel I! at a point lying substantially in the horizontal planes passing through the axes of the wheel and work holders. In this position of the parts, the table II may be traversedby means of the traverse wheel 48 to pass'the diamond HI across'the peripheral face of the wheel ll. The wheel I 4 may be fed into the diamond I ID to the required extent by turning or truing tool 65 or 66 is in operative position, the
diamond III) will be out of contact with the peripheral surface of the wheel.
- In the embodiment of this invention illustrated and described, three truing tools or diamonds have been illustrated, one for truing each side face of the wheel and the third for truing the periphery of the wheel, it being understood that this mechanism is adapted for operation for truing asingle surface of the wheel, that is, either the periphery or one side face of the wheel or any combination of the operative faces of the wheel.
In the operation of this truing apparatus, the.
assembled truing apparatus is placed in operative position in the machine with the shaft 50 supported in the work holders 34 and 35. The ate tachment is then clamped in operating position with the collar 52 up againstthe locating portion h 90 of the work holder 31. The stop 95 isthen swung into an operating position and the table l l traversed longitudinally into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 so that the left-hand side face of' the grinding wheel may be trued, then the table H is traversed toward the left to position the truing tool 66 in operative position relative to the right-hand end face of the wheel It to true the same. The lever I5 is then held in engagement with stop 85 while the grinding wheel II is fed transversely to bring the peripheral face of the grinding wheel l4 into contact with the diamond or truing tool H9 and the table II is then traversedto pass tool H0 across the peripheral face of the wheel 14 to true the same. After this truing operation has beencompleted, the truing attachment may be readily removed from the machine by releasing the clamps 36 and 31 and;
lifting the attachment bodily from the work holders 34 and 15. v
' It will thus be seen that there has been provided by this invention a truing apparatus in which the various objects hereinabove set forth together with many thoroughly practical advantages are successfully achieved. As many possible embodiments may be made of the above'invention and as many changes might o be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth, or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
