Abstract

626,975. Manually-operated brakes. LAVER, D. H., and COOMBS, H. J. Feb. 18, 1947, No. 30311. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a dual-control arrangement for a motor vehicle having a normal driving position and a supplementary driving position, each provided with a steering wheel and clutch and brake pedals, the supplementary brake pedal has a greater leverage on the brake system than the brake pedal in the normal position. The leverage on the system from the supplementary pedal may be adjustable. A supplementary throttle pedal and a horn control may also be fitted. As shown applied to a motor vehicle having the clutch 26 operated by the pedal 12 on a transverse shaft 19, fastened at 28 on the shaft 19 is an extension shaft 27 to which is secured the supplementary clutch pedal 29. Freely mounted on the shafts 19, 27 are the two brake pedals 13, 30 respectively, the tail of the former pedal being connected to the braking system by a flexible cable 18. The pedal 30 is connected to the pedal 13 by means of a cable 33. a two-armed lever 32 pivoted to the vehicle and a rod 34. The ratio of leverage between the two lever arms is made variable by a series of adjustment holes 32a, 32b. A length adjusting device 36 may be fitted on the cable 33. In a modification the cable 33 and adjusting device 36 are replaced by a rod and turnbuckle. In a further modification a single cable 37, Fig. 2, passing round a pulley 38 connects the brake pedals 13, 30 and the anchorage point 39 between the cable 37 and the pedal 30 is made variable in its distance from the centre of the shaft 27. The normal steering wheel and column 11 and supplementary ones 21, Fig. 1, are connected by sprockets 24, 23 and a chain 25 enclosed in a case, the normal steering box and drop arm being fitted to the column 11. In an alternative construction the steering column 21 also has a steering box and drop arm, the latter being connected to the drop arm on the column 11 by a universally jointed rod. Pedals 14, 31 control the throttle 17 through a transverse rod 15. An adjustable clamp device may secure the pedal 31 to the rod 15.
