Abstract

1,169,568. Motor vehicle controls. R. W. LEWTHWAITE. 16 April 1968 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 1678/67. Heading B7H. Motor vehicle controls for manual actuation by a disabled driver include a hand control member positioned adjacent the steering wheel and coupled to the brake and accelerator pedals through means including lost motion connections, downward movement of the member depressing the brake pedal and upward movement depressing the accelerator pedal, each without influencing the other of the two pedals. The manual control member comprises an arm 16 which has a curved end portion extending beneath the steering wheel rim and is pivotally mounted by a spindle 15 on a bracket 11 clamped to the steering column 7. A tubular thrust rod 19 linking the arm 16 and brake pedal 23 is pivotally connected at its lower end to an attachment 24 on the brake pedal arm 22 and at its upper end to the arm 16 through a screwed adjuster which fits loosely in the end of the rod to provide the requisite lost motion. A flexible cable 31 extends between the arm 16 and a member 44 connected by a clamp 43 to a rod 38 in the accelerator pedal linkage 32. The bracket 11 is extended to form a panel 12 for mounting headlamp flasher and dip switches 13, 14. Actuation of the steering wheel 6 may be facilitated by a knob 47 on the wheel rim, and a detachable extension member 17 may be fitted to the arm 16 for use by an instructor during driver training. If the vehicle includes a pedal-actuated clutch, an additional control lever operable by one finger may be arranged to control a servo device for actuating the clutch.
