[Class 37] [Also in Group XL (a)] , An apparatus for detecting and measuring the variation or movement of a magnetic field such as may be produced by a coil 31, comprises an electronic tube 32 having a cathode 34 and two anodes 36, 37 so disposed that the ratio of the anode currents is proportional to the magnetic field strength effective upon the electron stream from the cathode 34 and having at least two electrodes 35 at substantially the same potential as the cathode arranged at the sides of the electron stream for compressing the latter and means connected to the anodes for measuring the relative currents therethrough. A suppressor electrode 38 at substantially the same potential as the cathode 34 may be provided between the two anodes for increasing the sensitivity of the apparatus. The apparatus may be used for measuring the relative position of two objects or the electronic tube may be used to control a relay switch or motor for adjusting the position of two objects to some predetermined arrangement.
