Abstract

626,849. Wood forms; veneering. LEINO, E. M. Jan. 21, 1946, No. 2010. Convention date, May 19, 1945, [Classes 145(i) and 145 (ii)] Uneven wooden plates are finished by a method in which the work-piece is fed through a machine slot the width of which corresponds to the desired thickness of the work-piece the one side of the machine slot being formed of a support base and the other of the shearing line created by the cutting edges of one or more cutter blades stiffly supported but vertically adjustable with regard to the support base, performing the finishing movement, which direction is parallel with the support base and forms an angle with the direction of feed, while the workpiece is bent and pressed tightly against the support base by pressers on one or both sides of the cutter irons in such a manner that no shearing line or its tangent will touch the point of contact between the nearest presser and the work-piece. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 a large toothed cutter disc 1 revolves around axle 2 which is parallel with the feed direction. Workpiece 5 rests on a support base 3 with a curved working surface, this base sliding in guides 4. Pressers 6 are fixed tightly on both sides of the cutting disc. The finishing slot 7 between support base and disc can be carved either with the permanent teeth of the disc itself or with special toothpieces temporarily fastened to the disc edge and extending beyond the points of the permanent teeth. Then the support base is moved to the other end position, the workpiece placed on it, and both fed past the rotating disc which finishes the work-piece smooth. In the modification of Figs. 3 and 4 several narrow cutting discs 1 are fitted to a common axle 2 at set intervals, the axle being at an oblique angle to the feed direction and pressers 6 are placed both between and on the sides of the cutter discs. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification where the the cutter disc is a short cylindrical piece that rotates around its axle 2 fitted at right angles to the flat surface of base 3. The modification of Figs. 7 and 8 depicts a cutting mechanism made up of several straight blades 1 moving in a straight line and placed at an angle to both opposite feed directions. For use on a curved support base the support base and cutter are so fitted that they are adjustable both horizontally and vertically whereas for a flat working surface only vertical adjustment is necessary. For work-pieces which resist bending e.g. plywood a fixed short support base along which the work-piece glides through the finishing slot e.g. by means of feeding rolls is used.
