Abstract

626,820. Transmitting mechanical power. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and HIGHFIELD, F. W. W. Sept. 1, 1947, No. 24071. [Class 38 (iv)] To avoid excessive starting current in a battery-driven vehicle and thus permit the use of a smaller battery B, the motor M is of the compound wound type and is coupled to the transmission shaft E through an eddy-current clutch C. The coupling between the clutch and shaft may include a two-speed gear-box D providing speeds having a ratio of about 2 to 1. The gear-change mechanism is preferably biassed to the higher speed position by a spring J, but is automatically moved to the low gear position by an electromagnet F, when the load on the vehicle exceeds a predetermined amount, the magnet circuit including, for this purpose, a normally open switch f<SP>2</SP> which is closed upon a predetermined deflection of a suspension spring of the vehicle. A manuallyoperated rheostat R in the energizing circuit of the clutch controls the speed of the vehicle.
