Abstract
809,490. Clutch control. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS INDUSTRIELLES COMMERCIALES ET IMMOBILIERES INTER-TECHNIQUE. March 29, 1957 [March 31, 1956; Feb. 20, 1957], No. 10312/57. Class 80(2). The winding E of an electromagnetic clutch of the solid friction or particle type on a vehicle is energized from an auxiliary brush 1 provided on the usual engine-driven generator to supply a lower voltage than that provided by the two existing brushes and at a speed-response characteristic conforming more nearly to the engaging requirements of the clutch. The clutch winding E is fed through a relay 2 which, above the speed for non-slip engagement, changes the clutch to energization by the usual battery B. An additional relay R breaks the clutch-energizing circuit when its relay coil is energized by closure of a gear-shift switch ID. A centrifugal switch 102 maintains a section of the relay 2 energized to maintain full battery energization of the clutch down to a low speed (18-20 k.p.h.) for engine braking. A current-reversing switch IN V, operated by the gear-shift relay R, sends a reduced reverse current through the clutch winding E and a resistor r3 to overcome residual magnetism for rapid clutch release during gear shift. A manual emergency switch IS provides for direct battery energization of the clutch in the event of generator failure. I is a general switch and C the usual battery cut-out. Fig. 2, not shown, includes only the relay R, with a simple non-reversing switch, and the switches I, ID and IS. In Fig. 3, not shown, the relay 2 has only a single coil like 7a. In Fig. 4, not shown, the centrifugal switch (like IC2) controls a separate relay having the same effect as in Fig. 5, and the circuit from the auxiliary brush 1 to the relay 2 includes an acceleratorcontrolled resistor and a manually adjustable resistor. In Figs. 6 and 7, not shown, the single coil of the relay 2 is connected to the armature of the relay instead of to the auxiliary brush terminal, so that, at change-over, the relay coil becomes energized at full generator voltage.
