Abstract
626,716. Testing strands of fibres. LITTY, P. Aug. 22, 1946, No. 25021. Convention date, March 3, 1939. (Class 120 (iii)] Apparatus for ascertaining the mean useful length of the staple of a sliver, roving or similar strand of fibres (i.e. the mean length of all fibres lying side by side in a given cross-section of the strand, measured in the longitudinal direction of the strand), is adapted for feeding and cutting off a predetermined length of the strand which is more than twice the length of the longest fibre, for gripping the cut length at the middle and for combing out the two projecting ends until all loose fibres are removed. The weight of the remaining tuft of fibres can then be compared with the total weight before combing, and the mean useful length of staple determined from the relation :- As shown, a length of fibres a is clamped between plates 31, 32, being positioned laterally by guides 39 which can be swung up for this purpose to the position shown in dotted lines. One end of the fibres is then combed by needle combs 8... 14 mountd on a sector 7 rotated by a handle 5. The sector is mounted on an eccentric bush which is itself driven through reduction gearing so as to advance, the combs towards the fibres with successive revolutions. When one end of the fibres is combed, levers 41 are raised to allow the clamping device to be rotated about 180 degrees, the other end being combed similarly. A bell is arranged to ring after a predetermined number of revolutions of the sector 7 ; the sector is retained in the position shown by engagement of a stop 20 with a pawl 22. Uniform test lengths are obtained by feeding the strand between a roller 45, mounted on the sector spindle 4, and a weighted pressure roller 46 ; pawl 22 is released by depressing, a key 24, and handle 5 is rotated until stop 20 re-engages the pawl, when a knife 49 is operated to sever the test lengths of the strand. In a modification, the combs are pivoted on arms of the sector, and their angular positions are determined by engagement of rollers with a cam groove so that the combs are always directed perpendicularly to the fibres.
