[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for grinding straight toothed tooth of a batch of bevel of a flat-faced grinding wheel (see Group XXII) is provided with means for truing the face and edge of the wheel. A control shaft for the reciprocating drive of the wheel head 51, Fig. 4, drives a shaft 246 through gearing which rotates the shaft every third rotation of the control shaft and thus operates the automatic wheel truing mechanism after every third tooth has been ground. One tooth face only of each tooth of a batch of bevel wheels is ground in a first operation, the wheels being passed again through the machine with the grinding wheel oppositely arranged to grind the other tooth faces. The shaft 246 is connected through a universal joint to a shaft 249 which is provided with a face cam for rocking a lever carrying an adjustable tappet screw 253 at one end. This tappet bears against the end of a slidable rod 254 which at its other end supports a face-truing diamond 255 carried in an adjustable holder 271. A further cam on the shaft 249 operates ratchet mechanism to feed the horizontal slide 131, Fig. 6, carrying the grinding wheel in a transverse direction a distance equal to the amount of truing which is to be made. The housing for the wheel-truing mechanism is carried on a vertically adjustable slide 248. A bracket 275 oscillatable about the axis of the rod 254 carries a rod 284 which is rotated first about the axis of the rod 254 and then about its own axis by means of a hand lever 283 and lost-motion device. The rod 284 carries a further wheel-truing diamond 286 which thus shapes the edge of the wheel 56. The diamond 286 and its support are replaced by similar devices of opposite hand when the .grinding wheel is oppositely arranged and the rod 254 is then turned through a half rotation and keyed in position to operate again on the side face of the re-positioned wheel. To set up the truing diamonds correctly a disc is mounted on the grinding wheel spindle and its face adjusted by means of a mandrel, the diamonds then being adjusted to the disc by means of feeler gauges. Vertical adjustment of the grinding wheel is effected by a handwheel 130, Fig. 6, which adjusts the wheel and simultaneously moves the wheeltruing slide 248 downwardly through twice this distance in order that the wheel may be trued for its correct depth. A modified entirely hand-operated wheel-truing device is also described.
