Abstract

111,395. Lutiger, K., and Wirz, E. A. Feb. 7, 1917. Disk apparatus; milling-cutters, sharpening; driving and feed devices; gauges; tables etc.; trueing rotating tools.-In a machine for grinding the backs of the teeth of screwing-taps and of milling- cutters, the work is mounted between a spindle stock b, Fig. 2, and tail stock e carried on a table f<1>, which can be adjusted about a pivot f<2> on a transverse slide f controlled by springs c<2> to hold the work against the grinder k. The slide f is carried by a slide d, which can be traversed longitudinally by a rack d<1> and pinion d<3>, and is carried by a vertically adjustable stand u. The spindle stock has a loose sleeve b<2> mounted on the spindle b<1>, and on the loose sleeve are carried a worm gear g, a pattern cam a corresponding to the shape of the back of the teeth, and an indexing-plate h<1>. The cam a is engaged by a bowl c' carried by the slide d, and is provided with a circular slot a' and stops a<2>, between which an arm on the work spindle moves. The cam is adjusted relatively to the work and then the loose sleeve b<2>, is coupled to the spindle b<1> by a pin h<2> on a part secured to the shaft engaging a hole in the indexing-plate h<1>. The work is traversed across the grinder and is then turned slightly by the worm wheel g and another traverse made. The worm wheel g is turned by a worm g<1> carried by a hand-lever g<3> so that it can be put into or out of gear. The grinder is carried on a shaft k' adjustable longitudinally on a table k<3> pivoted at k<4> on the top of a column capable of adjustment about a vertical axis. A. bracket i carries a spindle i<2> at right-angles to the axis of the grinder. On this spindle is mounted a trueing- tool i<3>, which is held out of action by a spring i<4> but which can be advanced across the tool. This tool i<5> also serves as a gauge to adjust the position of the grinder. To grind milling-cutters &c. with helical teeth, the loose sleeve on the spindle stock carries a gear wheel meshing with a pinion on a grooved shaft s, Fig. 4, parallel to the spindle. A pinion s' slides on this shaft and engages a quadrant s<4> mounted in a stand s<5> on the pivoted table s<8>. The quadrant s' carries a guide-finger s", which engages with the end of one of the helical teeth on the cutter t. As the work is reciprocated in front of the grinder, the stand s<5> is caused to remain in one position by a fixed pin s<10> engaging a hold s<9> in the stand. Any movement of the loose sleeve on the spindle to adjust the work between the traverses in front of the grinder is communicated to the segment s' and guide-finger s<17>. The work is held against the guide-finger by a spring n<1>, Fig. 6, wrapped round the boss n<2> of a loose sleeve carrying an arm n<3>, in which is mounted a pin n<4> adapted to engage a hole in a plate n<5> keyed to the spindle. The spring can be wrapped round in either direction to allow for the grinding of right or left hand cutters &c.
