Abstract

Wood sheet such as plywood is made water-resistant but moisture vapour transmitting by applying at least two coatings of a composition containing vinyl chloride copolymers of average molecular weight of between 16,000 and 24,000. The first coating is applied as a calendar coating using considerable pressure and heat, whereas the subsequent overcoating or overcoats are applied as knife coatings, the composition of the latter coating containing an absorbent ingredient such as silica gel and a volatile solvent, the solvent being removed after application. The composition of the calendar coating contains no absorbent or volatile solvent. The compositions may contain plasticizers, pigments, and fillers (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:Coating compositions comprising vinyl chloride copolymers of average molecular weight between 16,000-24,000 may contain one or more of the following plasticizers: butyl rincinoleate; tricresyl phosphate; a mixture of di-butoxy ethyl phthalate, di-butyl mono-ethyl ether of ethylene glycol phthalate and butoxy glycol phthalate; a mixture of di-caprylate esters of triethylene glycol and di-esters of other fatty acids; solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone; a fungicide such as pentachlorphenol, dihydroxy dichlorodiphenyl methane, salicylanilide, copper naphthanate; pigments; an absorbent material such as silica gel; and fillers such as calcium carbonate or china clay.
