[Class 18] [Also in Group XXIII] A brush comprises a brush head, a casing formed in two portions pivoted together and defining between them a space to house the bristles of the brush, the brush head being hinged or pivoted to one of the portions of the casing, spring means associated with the brush head for urging said brush head towards its operative position in which it lies outward of said casing and said brush head being capable of being swung from its operative position against the action of the spring when the casing is open into a position where the bristles are housed within the casing when the latter is closed and spring means for urging said two portions together said spring, such means being strong enough to prevent the two portions being separated by the spring acting on the brush. head when the latter is housed within the casing, the pivot between the two portions of the casing being located along a line adjacent to the back ends of the two portions so that on squeezing the back ends together the front of the casing opens up in the manner of jaws. In the Figures, the casing which may be of thin sheet steel is in two portions and the brush head consists of a wooden member 6 to which the bristles are secured and which is pivoted on a pin 7 between the side walls of the lower portion. A coil spring 8 (Fig. 3) closely surrounds the pin 7 and is attached at one end to side wall 3 and at the other end to the wooden member 6 and tends to rotate the brush into operative position (Fig. 2) in which the back curved portion 9 abuts rim 5 thus preventing further rotation. A spring 14 between the two portions is provided just in front of the pivot pin 13 by which the two portions are pivoted and tends to keep the casing closed. In order to enclose the brush the front of the casing is opened by squeezing the back ends together and the brush moved inwards so that the bristles lie within the lower portion of the casing whereupon the top portion of the casing is allowed to close. The brush is opened by squeezing the back ends of the portions together when the front opens and the brush head swings into its operative position, the top portion is then allowed to close and the brush head is thus held against rotation since the curved portion 9 abuts the small rims 5 and 12 at the front of the two portions of the casing which thus serves as a handle for the brush.
