Abstract

Para-dichlorbenzene is produced by passing chlorine into a mixture containing 40-50 per cent of benzene and 60-50 per cent of monochlorbenzene, at a temperature between 30-40 DEG C. so that the benzene is converted to monochlorbenzene and the monochlorbenzene to dichlorbenzene. A Friedel Crafts catalyst e.g. ferric chloride is used. The mixture of chlorbenzenes is first neutralized with sodium hydroxide and the monochlorbenzene is then distilled off. The dichlorbenzenes are then fractionated so that the meta and para isomers are distilled leaving the ortho. The para isomer is then crystallized out from the meta by cooling. The hydrochloric acid produced in the original chlorination is reacted with benzene vapour and air in the presence of a catalyst composed of copper and iron chlorides to give monochlorbenzene. The monochlorbenzene so produced together with that obtained from the first distillation is returned to the chlorination step to be converted to dichlorbenzene. The invention is illustrated by means of a diagrammatic flow sheet.
