Abstract
Hydroquinone is obtained by passing a mixture of hydrogen, steam and quinone vapour, optionally in presence of an organic solvent, stable under the reaction conditions, e.g. benzene, chlorbenzene or alcohol, over a hydrogenation catalyst, such as nickel, cobalt or copper, either separately or in admixture, advantageously employed as granules or blocks having good mechanical resistance, this state being effected by mixing with cements or clays; an alloy of nickel and aluminium superficially attacked by alkali is likewise effective. Fouling of the catalyst and formation of by-products is avoided. In examples: (1) hydrogen, steam and quinone are passed at 240 DEG C. over granular nickel-cement; (2) hydrogen, steam, quinone and chlorbenzene vapour are reacted as in (1), the vapours being fractionally condensed to obtain concentrated aqueous hydroquinone and effect recovery of chlorobenzene.
