Abstract

A mixture consisting essentially of brominated biphenyls, in which 2,4,41 and 3,4,41-tribromo biphenyl together form the major component may be used as a heat transfer fluid.ALSO:The invention relates to a mixture consisting essentially of brominated biphenyls in which 2,4,41 - acid 3,4,41 - tribromobiphenyl together form the major component. Preferably the combined weight of these isomers is at least 60% of the total weight of the mixture, e.g. 75% to 90%, the residual components being di-bromobiphenyls, other isomeric tri-bromobiphenyls or tetrabromobiphenyls. The mixture may be obtained by reacting biphenyl, 4-bromobiphenyl or 4,41-di-bromobiphenyl with an amount of the brominating agent such that the product is a mixture of bromobiphenyls in which tribromobiphenyls form the major component Preferably the brominating agent is bromine and at least the introduction of the third bromine atom into a bi-phenyl nucleus is effected in the presence of a bromination catalyst, e.g. aluminium bromide.
