Abstract

a -Acyl-methylene derivatives of N-heterocyclic bases are obtained from cyclammonium salts having reactive thioether groups in the a -position with respect to the quaternary N-atom, by the action of an acyl acetic acid in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as triethylamine. Examples show the preparation of 2-acetylmethylene-N-methyl- and N-ethyl-2 : 3-dihydro-benzthiazoles and of N : N-dimethylene - di - (2 - acetylmethylene - 2 : 3-dihydro-benzthiazole). Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of 2-acetylmethylene-N-methyl-1 : 2-dihydro-quinoline and 2-acetylmethylene - 3 - methyl - 5 - methylmercapto-2 : 3-dihydro-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazole prepared by the process of the invention. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to derivatives without specifying the a -position, and also mentions pyridine and piperidine as acid-binding agents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
