Abstract

624,928. Flexible abrasive discs. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. July 11, 1947, Nos. 18563 and 18564. Convention dates, March 16, 1942, and April 23, 1942. [Class 60] An abrasive disc comprises a number of superimposed disc members each having a number of slits extending from their peripheries inwardly toward the centre to form segmented sections adapted to be interlaced to cover all the rotationally leading edges. A sandpaper disc 2, Fig. 1, with radial slits 7 is placed on another disc 3, Fig. 2, with dog-leg slits 11, their abrasive-coated surfaces upwards, and the segments 6, 9 interlaced, Fig. 4. A similar complementary pair 19 of abrasive discs form the reverse side of a composite assembly 20, Fig. 5, so that the rotationally leading edge of each segment on either side is covered by an adjacent segment. The assembly 20 may be mounted for rotation on a spindle head 26. Various modifications are described, in one of which only three discs are used to form an assembly, other modifications dealing with various shapes of slits in the discs.
