Abstract

624,718. Regenerative ventilating systems. JAPOLSKY, N. S., and RANKINE, A. O. Oct. 28, 1946, No. 31993. [Class 137] [Also in Groups XIII and XXVI] Rotary apparatus for heating and cooling air or other gases by compression and expansion comprises a driven rotor 1 having two sets of radial peripheral passages 30, 37 and 31, 34 through which two streams of air &c. are conveyed by centrifugal force in opposite directions, the two streams passing through alternate closely-spaced passages separated by heat conducting partitions between the points 60, 37 and 61, 62 respectively so that in this zone 33 heat exchange takes place between them giving isothermal conditions, both streams being adiabatically compressed prior to entry into the isothermal zone, and one stream being isothermally expanded. The rotor is mounted on a shaft 2 driven by a connection 3 in bearings 4, 11 supported by spider arms from flared casings 7, 13 separating the streams of air so that the passages 31, 34 communicate with openings 15, 10, and the passages 30, 37 with openings 19, 20 in the outer casing. For heating the air within a building the openings 10, 20 are arranged within the building and the opening 15, 19 are open to the external atmosphere. Air drawn in from outside at 19 is adiabatically compressed at 30 and passes at 60 into alternate passages of the isothermal zone 33 where it expands and issues into the building at 20 at a higher temperature. Air from within the building is drawn in at 10, compressed adiabatically at 34 and isothermally at 33 giving up heat to the expanding inlet air, adiabatically expanded at 31 and issues to the outside at 15. For cooling the building the openings 19, 15 are arranged to withdraw air from and deliver cooled air to the building, and the openings 10, 20 are open to the outside atmosphere. The apparatus can be divided into several stages arranged in cascade, either in a single rotor or in several coaxial rotors connected by stator ducts.
