Abstract

1434253 Pressure exchangers; gas turbine plant BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 23 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 49359/73 Headings F1G and F1N A pressure exchanger comprises a rotor 4 having a ring of open-ended cells 5 which are inclined with respect to the axis of rotation, the radially inner ends of the cells being arranged to co-operate with cold gas (e.g. air) inlet and outlet ports 7, 8 in an end housing (14) and the radially outer ends being arranged to co-operate with hot gas inlet and outlet ports 10, 11 in an end housing (13). Thus gases in the cells are subjected to centrifugal forces in addition to the pressure and dynamic forces. The cross-sectional area of the cells is kept constant by varying the radial dimensions of the cells between their ends to compensate for their inclination. The Specification explains how the centrifugal forces act to improve the type of thermal process in which the hot gas inlet and compressed cold gas outlet pressure are desired to be approximately equal while the expanded hot gas pressure is greater than the cold gas inlet pressure. Such a thermal process is desired where, as shown, the exchanger rotor is driven in unison with, or independently of, the shaft 3 connecting a gas turbine 2 and its compressor 1. Air from the compressor 1 after compression in the cells passes through a combustor 9 before being expanded in the cells and discharged to the turbine 2.
