Abstract

<PICT:0624605/III/1> <PICT:0624605/III/2> An apparatus for effecting intimate contact between a liquid and a gas or vapour, e.g. a dephlegmator, comprises a housing containing a plurality of superposed liquid-cascade sections disposed at right angles to each other, each section being made up of staggered troughs associated with vertical baffles, the upper ends of which are perforated, whereby upwardly flowing streams of gas are directed horizontally into staggered streams of liquid to produce a series of turbulently and rapidly - moving intimate mixtures of gas and liquid, and these mixtures are impelled against the baffles. A series of horizontal cascade sections A, B (Fig. 1) disposed at right angles to each other are mounted in housing 15. Each section comprises staggered troughs 31, baffles 123, the upper ends of which are perforated, and a box 37 with open ends. Each section has associated with it two seal pans 36 into which liquid, from the box of the section above, is guided by aprons 38. The liquid flows over the lips 35 of the seal pans towards the uppermost troughs of the section, but, as it falls, some of it is entrained by transverse streams of vapour; and the resulting intimate mixtures strike the lower, non-perforated portions of the corresponding baffles 123. The mixture is diverted up each baffle to the perforated portion thereof. The liquid passes through the perforations and flows down the back of the baffle to the next lower trough where it is again contacted and entrained by a transverse vapour stream. The liquid flows down the backs of the two lowest baffles into box 37. The fractionation of hydrocarbons and of alcohols is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes modified devices such as that shown in Fig. 2 (Cancelled), wherein mixtures of liquid and vapour strike horizontal, perforated baffles 23 which support Raschig rings 26. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
