624,499. Earth excavators. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. May 5, 1947, No. 12110. Convention date, May 31, 1946. [Class 68 (i)] When in use the operating depth of the cutting edge of a bulldozer blade is maintained constant by a trailing pivoted shoe 18 which rests on the prepared ground. The angle the shoe makes with the blade determines whether the blade penetrates into the soil in a downward, upward or level direction and in normal use is such that the shoe is horizontal. This angle is regulated by remotely-controlled hydraulic rams pivotally connected between the shoe and brackets 22 on the back of the blade. The flat ground-engaging portion of the shoe extends the whole width of the blade. The rear of the shoe is curved upwards and the space so enclosed between the blade and the shoe is prevented from entrapping earth by a screen 27, the flexible edge 28 of which engages the upturned flange 26 of the shoe. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a series of narrow shoes or a shoe of a lesser width than the blade. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
