Abstract
624,482. Electrolysis. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 11, 1947, No. 6767. Convention date, March 11, 1946. [Class 41] Apparatus for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal salts in a cell having a conducting base, comprises two parts the lower part consisting of a frame, strong enough to impart the required rigidity to the whole, while the upper part consists of an electrolysis vessel of light and relatively flexible construction, the vessel resting for its total length on the rigid frame and separated therefrom by a layer of thermally and electrically-insulating material. As shown, a vessel a constituting the electrolytic cell rests by means of an insulating layer b of fibro-cement on a frame c, supported on insulators. The vessel has a flat sheet metal conducting base e and vertical walls f carried by insulating lining g. The insulating layer b consists of two lateral bands b<SP>1</SP> and a broad central band b<SP>2</SP>.The vessel a may be joined to the frame c at one end by bolts i located at the corners. The covers j of the vessel, to which are fixed the anodes k, rest directly on the walls f and are tightly closed by means of a solid packing l in a V- shaped groove between the wall section f and the edges of the covers, the packing being tightened by a clamp m. The cell may be connected electrically to the next cell by means of a bar n fixed to the conducting base e.
