Abstract

624,258. Machinery safety devices. HUNT, A. W., and PURDY & HUNT, Ltd. June 20, 1947, No. 16397. [Class 80 (iv)] A safety device for saws, lathes and like machines having a movable jig or saddle for carrying the work comprises two switches in an electric circuit controlling the machine starting device such as an electric motor. As shown a circular saw 3 is mounted upon a fixed bed 1 and the work is adapted to be supported between centres on a movable saddle 2. Switches 7 and 8 are arranged in series with a starter coil 9 for the electric driving motor, the first 7 of which is adapted to be closed when a workpiece is clamped between the saddle centres to move the centre 11 to actuate the said switch whilst the second 8 is adapted to be closed by an adjustable member 28 secured to the saddle 2 when the saddle has advanced the work to within a predetermined distance from the saw 3. Only when both switches are closed is the circuit of the coil 9 completed to enable the motor to be started.
