Abstract

Compositions for removing moisture and carbon dioxide from gases and regenerating oxygen at subnormal temperatures, for example for use in breathing apparatus, comprise an intimate mixture of an alkali-metal peroxide, e.g. potassium or sodium peroxides, and an alkaline lithium compound, e.g. lithium peroxide, lithium hydroxide, or lithium hydroxide monohydrate, which will react with carbon dioxide to evolve heat. Catalysts to accelerate oxygen liberation such as oxides or oxychlorides of copper, manganese, nickel, or similar metals having atomic weights between 50 and 65, may be added, while examples include slaked lime. The ingredients are granulated, mixed in an edge-runner mill, and compressed. Some moisture as water of crystallization or hydration should be added to the mixture by using either lithium hydroxide monohydrate and/or a separate hydrated compound, e.g. hydrate sodium sulphate. The compressed mass is heated until reaction occurs throughout, and the hard porous product is cooled and granulated.
