Abstract

624,039. Windscreen wipers. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. March 19, 1947, No. 7612, Convention date, April 13, 1946. [Class 138(i)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] Apparatus for cleaning the windscreens of motor vehicles in which liquid is pumped from a reservoir and sprayed through a nozzle under pressure has means for cutting off the liquid supply to the nozzle when the pressure falls below a pre-determined minimum. The nozzle is connected through a check valve 26, Fig. 2, to a pump 6 which is mounted on the cover 9 of a fluid recervoir 10 by means of a fitting 8; this fitting contains an intake valve 33 and has a depending intake tube 11 screwed to it. The pump 6 has a casing 13 containing a flexible diaphragm 14 anchored by crimping its edges to the casing. The diaphragm is urged downwardly by a compression spring 19 which seats on a cupped plate 21. The underside of the diaphragm is re-inforced by a plate 22 held by a beaded stud 23. The side of the pump chamber above the diaphragm is connected to a suction pipe 7. The intake valve 33 is provided with a dumping port 34, Fig. 3, normally closed by a valve 31 urged by a spring 32. A pair of arms 39 is connected to the shank 37 of the dumping valve 31 for contacting the diaphragm 14 near the end of its stroke so as to open the dumping valve. Upward movement of the intake valve 33 is limited by a pin 40. In operation, suction is applied to the pipe 7 causing the diaphragm 14 to lift against the pressure of spring 19 and sucking liquid from the reservoir through the valve 33. When the suction is removed by means of a cock in the suction line, the diaphragm is forced down by the spring 19 expelling liquid through the check-valve 26 into the nozzle. The intake valve 33 is closed by pressure and the dump valve 31 by its spring 32. Near the end of the diaphragm stroke the dump valve is opened by its arms 39 coming into contact with the diaphragm and the remaining liquid in the pump is returned to the reservoir, the check valve 26 closing to prevent escape through the nozzle. In a modification the pump 6 may be mounted inside 'the reservoir. The intake valve is a rubber diaphragm 33<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, which closes holes 27<SP>1</SP>. 27" and is held centrally by a pin 47. The dump valve 31' is mounted to one side of the intake valve and its head is depressed by the pump diaphragm plate 22'.
