Abstract

623,819. Ball bearings. AETNA BALL & ROLLER BEARING CO. Oct. 11, 1946, No. 30454. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1944. [Class 12 (i)] A ball bearing is maintained in a constant state of lubrication without substantial loss of lubricant by the fixed race having a sleeve-like part extending axially in close proximity to a hub-like part on the rotating race, the hub having a helical groove whereby escaping lubricant is fed back to the bearing. In the thrust bearing shown, the periphery of the fixed race 12 is shaped to correspond to the gripping part 28 of a cover 16 so that the cover is permanently attached to this race. At its other end the cover has a cylindrical flange 34, the inner surface 35 of which is close to a hub 36 provided on the race 13 to the shaft 11. This hub 36 has a spiral groove 43 so arranged that when the bearing is rotating, any lubricant tending to escape is carried back. The inner plane surfaces 22, 39 of the races are provided with ball grooves 23, 41; a pressed-steel, annular ball-separator 14 has ball sockets 56 formed by flanges 58 opening towards the left which alternate with similar sockets opening towards the right, the balls 17 being held in place by engagement with the races and by the separator which is itself centred between the races by this arrangement of the balls. The balls determine the concentric location of the race 12 with respect to the shaft 11 and hold it out of contact with the shaft, and the cover 16 carried by this race is maintained in concentric position with respect to the hub 36. Both races have annular recesses 44, 45 for a freely floating sealing member 15 which closes the space around the balls. In order to maintain the lubricant in the housing chamber 60 in a uniformly distributed and homogeneous condition, the outer cylindrical surface 54 of the separator is provided with a flat radially extending lug or homogenizer 61 which progresses through the lubricant when the bearing is operated. The complementary bearing surfaces on the members 34, 36 keep the races and balls in substantial alignment when there is no thrust on the bearing, so that the risk of chipping the balls or raceways due to the sudden application of a heavy thrust is minimized. In a modification, the flange 34 of the cover extends outwards and is provided with a bushing of a metal different from that of the hub.
