Abstract
623,634. Compound sheet materials. DEHN, F. B. (Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation). Aug. 8, 1945, No. 20345. [Class 140] An insulating pad such as that described and claimed in Specification 623,633, is made by applying a film of a rubber hydrohalide on to a matted layer of fibreglass, after treating the film or the surface of the padding with a solvent which renders the film adhesive and applying heat and pressure to bond the film to the matted layer and securing a finishing fabric to the other face of the layer. As shown in Fig. 3, a web 8a of loosely-matted fibreglass is fed by rolls 13 and 14 while the film 9a drawn from roll 15 and over rolls 16 and 17 is sprayed with a solvent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, from sprayplate 18. The film and matted layer then pass together through the feed rolls of which the rolls 13 are internally heated to accelerate the adhesion and evaporate the solvent. The combined web is cut into the desired sections and covered on the bare face with a textile fabric which is folded around the edges of the combined film and fibreglass and secured thereto by seams extending throughout the marginal portion, film, fibreglass and the covering face. In a modification (Fig. 4), the top face of the matted layer 8a is moistened with the solvent from spray-plate 18a and the layer meets the film 9a at the feed rolls 24-25. They then pass over a pad 29 connected by the pipe 30 to a vacuum pump provided with a perforated top plate 31 through which air is drawn, causing the film to unite with the fibreglass. To seal off the film with the vacuum pad, the film overlaps the side edges of the matted web. Infra-red lamps 33 accelerate the adhesion and dry the combined layers. Specification 451,573 also is referred to.
