Abstract

964,604. Laminates and laminating. FMC CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1962, No. 6385/62. Heading B5N. Open-mesh woven rayon fabric. or similar unwoven rayon fabric made by adhesively securing the warps and wefts at their crossing points, is laminated between two webs of paper coated with aqueous adhesive such as polyvinyl alcohol, animal glue, carboxymethyl cellulose or rubber latex, under conditions in which the normal extensibility of the fabric (for example 18%) is reduced to that of the paper (for example 4%) by pre-stretching the fabric by the amount of its excess extensibility and effecting the bonding, and drying the laminate, in the stretched condition of the fabric. As shown, a web of open-mesh rayon fabric 10 is supplied to a pair of rolls at 14 from a supply roll, the speed of which is adjusted in relation to that of the rolls 14 to effect the desired longitudinal extension of the fabric, lateral extension thereof to the same extent being effected by gripping each edge between a pair of rotatable nip-discs such as 19 set at a slight angle to one another. Upper and lower paper webs 11, 12, which are untensioned, are sprayed on their inner surfaces with aqueous adhesive and fed between the rolls 14 and the laminate so formed is passed around heated pressure rolls 22 and delivered at 23.
